Walking in for “a few things” and leaving with a lifestyle.
Raccoon Rating: 🦝🦝
The grocery store is not neutral ground.
It is designed to exploit hunger, emotions, lighting, music, and the raccoon instinct to acquire treats “just in case.” You may enter with a plan. You will leave with opinions.
This guide will help you leave with food that makes sense.
Step 1: Never Grocery Shop While Hungry
This is the most important rule.
A hungry raccoon cannot be reasoned with. Hunger turns “I need eggs” into “I deserve novelty snacks and a frozen pizza shaped like optimism.”
Eat something first. Anything.
Step 2: Start With Meals, Not Items
Humans who “have it together” think in meals.
Before the store, decide:
- 3–5 meals you will actually eat
- Not aspirational meals
- Not meals that require energy you do not possess
Write down what those meals need. That is your list.
Step 3: Categories Save You From Yourself
A good raccoon list includes:
- Proteins
- Produce
- Carbs
- Snacks (yes, explicitly)
- One “fun” item
If snacks are not on the list, they will still appear — just more chaotically.
Step 4: Beware the Middle Aisles
The perimeter of the store contains:
- produce
- dairy
- meat
- basic sustenance
The middle contains:
- lifestyle experiments
- emotional purchases
- things you did not know existed but now must have
Enter the middle aisles with purpose or not at all.
Step 5: Accept That You Will Still Buy Extras
The goal is not perfection.
The goal is:
- fewer mystery items
- fewer forgotten essentials
- less “how did I spend this much?”
If you leave with food you can actually eat during the week, you won.
Final Note From the Trench Coat
Planning groceries is not about discipline. It’s about reducing future stress.
A raccoon with a plan still buys treats. They just also buy vegetables.
You are learning. Be gentle. Eat something when you get home.
